How to Price Products for Profit in an eCommerce Business

Introduction

Pricing is one of the most important decisions in an online business. A product may receive plenty of orders but still lose money if its selling price does not cover advertising, shipping, payment fees, returns, and other expenses.

A profitable pricing strategy begins with understanding the real cost of every order.

1. Calculate Your True Product Cost

Suppose an online store sells a product for $40.

Its estimated costs are:

  • Product cost: $12

  • Packaging: $2

  • Shipping subsidy: $4

  • Payment fees: $1.50

  • Advertising cost per order: $8

Total variable cost = $27.50.

Contribution per order:

$40 − $27.50 = $12.50

That leaves $12.50 before fixed overhead, taxes, and other excluded expenses.

This is more useful than looking at the difference between selling price and product cost alone.

2. Understand Your Contribution Margin

Contribution margin shows how much revenue remains after variable costs.

Contribution Margin % = Contribution ÷ Revenue × 100

In this example:

$12.50 ÷ $40 × 100 = 31.25%

This margin helps you determine how much room you have for overhead and profit.

3. Use Different Pricing Strategies

Cost-plus pricing adds a markup to your costs. Competitor-based pricing compares your offer with similar products. Value-based pricing considers the value customers perceive.

No strategy works automatically. Research competitors, test customer response, and account for your actual expenses.

4. Calculate Break-Even Advertising Cost

If your pre-ad contribution is $20 per order, spending $20 to acquire that order leaves nothing for fixed expenses or profit.

Your maximum break-even acquisition cost is approximately the contribution available before advertising, assuming all other costs are included.

Conclusion

Profitable pricing requires more than copying competitors. Calculate real costs, monitor contribution margin, and review pricing whenever supplier, shipping, or advertising expenses change.
